MP Barry Sheerman visited a local company to learn how a new type of concrete mixer will benefit builders in Huddersfield.

The town’s MP met John Quinn at his company Hi-Spec Concrete Limited at Albert Street in Lockwood.

Mr Quinn, from Lindley, told Mr Sheerman how the company – formed in the summer last year – has just invested in a Volumetric Concrete Mixer which is unique to the area.

Mr Quinn, who has worked in building for many years, said: “We mix our concrete fresh on site, meaning that builders have longer to work with the concrete before it sets, it also means that we can dispense the exact quantity required and only charge for what we dispense.

“Our drum mixer competitors charge if customers don’t order a full load and they also charge if you don’t take all the concrete you order – this can be as much as £180 per cubic metre for any concrete that is returned on their mixer.”

Another benefit of mixing fresh concrete on site means that the company can change the quantities for each pour, or pour more if required.

The company say the business is doing well – with many builders, developers and construction companies using their mixer rather than traditional drum delivered concrete which is already mixed when it arrives.
